Dear #DailyFollower,
Dr Myles Munroe said, “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.”
To make the most of our existence as humans (generally), and more specifically as followers of Jesus, it helps to know why we are here, what we are here to do, and how to connect the whys and whats of our existence.
So, it is essential to understand why we follow to make the most of our daily journeys as followers and avoid ‘abusing’ our position.
In yesterday’s letter, I shared thoughts about who a daily follower is based on the words of Jesus in John 15:1-11, EXB. Today, I build on these thoughts from statements Jesus made in verses 9 and 10:
9 I loved you as the Father loved me. Now ·remain [abide] in my love. 10 I have ·obeyed [kept] my Father’s commands, and I ·remain [abide] in his love. In the same way, if you ·obey [keep] my commands, you will ·remain [abide] in my love.
Love is at the centre of abiding in Christ.
It is also why we obey - our most important duty as followers.
Love was the foundation of Christ's coming into the world, calling us to follow Him and making a way to do that practically and consistently through His sacrifice on the cross. John 3:16, EXB, tells us that much.
16 “[For] God loved the world so much that he gave his ·one and only [only; unique; only begotten; 1:14, 18] Son so that whoever believes in him may not ·be lost [perish], but have eternal life.
Christ’s calling to follow Him is a call to allow His love to shine in (and through) us to a world longing for genuine and sincere expressions of love.
That’s why when asked about the greatest commandment, Christ says it is love, first for God, then for all humans (Matthew 22:37-40, EXB).
37 Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind [Deut. 6:5].’ 38 This is the first and ·most important [greatest] command. 39 And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself [Lev. 19:18].’ 40 All the law and the ·writings of the prophets [prophets] ·depend [are based; hang] on these two commands.”
It’s all for love.
He came to us for love, He gave Himself for love, and He calls us to Himself for love.
Love must be the central reason we follow daily. When it is, we see the demands of following daily from a different perspective - one that diminishes the challenges following daily and amplifies the outcomes that Christ’s love enables.
The purpose of following Jesus daily is to see His love shine in (and through) us to a world in much need of love.
In 2025, let’s commit to being channels through which Christ’s love shines to the world around us every day; this is one way to be an active daily follower.
