Dear #DailyFollower,
Introduction
Proverbs 13 highlights the power of choice, especially in our associations, words, and discipline. At every turn, this chapter reminds us that wisdom is not merely about what we know but about how we live, who we listen to, and the direction we choose to walk in daily.
This proverb contains life principles: choosing wise friends, managing your mouth, stewarding your resources, and embracing correction. Each verse calls us to a life of intentionality rooted in righteousness.
Let’s dive in.
The Text
📖 Proverbs 13:1-3, EXB
1 A wise son listens to his father’s ·instruction [discipline], but a ·mocker [scoffer] does not listen to correction.
2 People ·will be rewarded for what they say [eat from the fruit of their mouth], but those who ·can’t be trusted [act treacherously] want only violence.
3 Those who ·are careful about what they say [guard their mouth] protect their lives, but whoever ·speaks without thinking [opens wide their lips] will be ruined.
📖 Proverbs 13:20-21, AMPC
20 He who walks with wise men is wise, but a companion of [conceited, self-confident] fools is a fool himself and shall smart for it.
21 Evil pursues sinners, but the consistently upright and in right standing with God is recompensed with good.
These verses reflect the key messages of the chapter: choose your circle wisely, guard your words, and be teachable.
Some Thoughts
Choose your companions wisely – Our friendships shape our futures. Walk with the wise, and you will grow in wisdom. Surround yourself with scoffers, and you’ll inherit their pain.
Words can protect or destroy – What we say has weight. Careless speech can lead to ruin, but guarded words preserve life.
Discipline leads to fulfilment – Proverbs 13 shows that the diligent and the teachable enjoy the fruit of their labour and learning, while laziness and rebellion lead to want.
A Few Questions To Ponder
Here’s what to reflect on today:
Who am I allowing to influence me most right now—are they walking in God’s wisdom?
Do I guard my speech or speak impulsively?
Am I pursuing discipline and diligence, or making excuses for delay and inaction?
Walking with the wise isn’t just about having wise friends—it’s about adopting their ways and valuing their input.
Conclusion
Every day, we get to choose: Will we walk with the wise or the foolish? Will we guard our words or speak without restraint? Will we embrace discipline or resist it? Proverbs 13 invites us to take the path of wisdom—one that leads to protection, prosperity, and peace.
Today’s challenge: Evaluate your current influences and habits. Choose to walk with the wise and embrace godly discipline in all you do.
Yours faithfully,
